Nature· Travel

14 Jun

Not only do I travel in order to photograph weddings, but it seems lately that it’s been more so for personal reasons.  And it makes it so much more worth the while when I can involve photography somehow!  Because you know, you can’t lose sight of why you originally pick up a camera, right?  For me it was nature.

So back in April, I ventured to Whitmire, SC to photograph a prescribed burn gone wrong.  Well, to be honest, I have compassion for both parties involved in this incident because 1.  I personally know the landowner of the destroyed timber and know the time and money lost on their part, while on the other hand 2.  I’m the daughter of a forester who was burn boss on the Sumter National Forest for a bit and know the stress the responsible party, whom I also personally know, was under.  A prescribed burn should not scorch the canopy of a stand of timber; however, this burn got way too hot and did just that.

Later that same week I ventured to Branchville, SC to photograph my uncle’s farm which is located along the Edisto River.  He has several crops in production such as blueberries, figs, tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, etc.  Here is the field of blueberries just planted this year.

Being property adjacent the Edisto River, I was able to snap some awesome shots there as well.

Love this of the cypress knees!

As most anyone, I spend a lot of time close to ‘home’ which is Cross Anchor, SC for me.  While there, I frequent Molly’s Farm Strawberry Patch!  Strawberries are a favorite of mine.  Mmmm.  I love everything about them, not only the taste but the fresh smell lingering throughout the whole area!

Moseying on over into May, my family and I made our way down to the SC coast for a little R&R one weekend– Litchfield Beach.  All I have to say is praise the Lord for my MIL as she stayed put with my son (who did not like the beach) during his nap time.  I mean really, when was the last time I could totally devote ALL of my brain to a good read?!?!  Speaking of a good read, One Thousand Gifts by Anne Voskamp is the book of choice at this point and a great one at that!

Two days after returning from Litchfield Beach, we ventured to Cleveland, Tennessee.  We used to live there, and it will forever be a place that we vacation!  We love and miss it so much :/  During our last visit, I was able to capture a picture of the 13 year cicadas that are surfacing throughout the Southeast.  We have them here in SC too, but until now, I was unable to really capture a close-up of one.

I really do miss the ridge and valley land of East TN.  Here is a snapshot I captured on Hwy 58 between Decatur and Georgetown!  This was a marketing tactic started during the Great Depression by Rock City which is located near Ruby Falls in Chattanooga, TN.  You can see barns painted with “See Rock City” as far North as Michigan and as far West as Texas.

Happy trails to you, until we meet again!

🌻🍉 Summer Photo Dump 6 🍉🌻

Mid-July we got the family together out on the river! We got all set up on a sandbar for the day, to be able to just chill- have a picnic and let the littles play their hearts out. Well… that was our hopes at least. 🤦‍♀️🫠 About an hour later, ALLLLL the boats showed up (group of friends) and just beached it right where we were swimming with the kids. I will never understand this… I am just of the mindset if you missed out on the sandbar, you missed out. Not… “well, we’ll just squeeze right in here on top of y’all.” But whatever. 😵‍💫 AmIright? Is that not the unwritten, understood law of the river rats? 🤣

🌻🍉 Summer Photo Dump 5 🍉🌻

Beach days are the best days!!! We were able to make 2 different day trips to the coast this summer.

1. We are thankful for sweet friends who allow us to crash their family camping vacation for a day! 🤣

2. And we are thankful for another group who are willing to up and haul their families to the coast for a day, too! 🤗

Our old-soul, mancub hit a milestone birthday this summer. So, as an early birthday present, we hesitantly (😅) decided to take him and a friend to a Hank Jr. concert, since they are both big fans. Our thought process: “Hank Jr. is old now… sure his music is timeless, but it’s bound to draw an older, more calm crowd nowadays.” NOPE. 😆🥴

The trip morphed into a group trip with the friend’s parents and sister, and my dad joined us, too! All was well until a thunderstorm sent everyone to the concessions area where we were packed in like sardines for TWO HOURS to avoid the lightening and rain best we could. 😳 Well, you can only imagine most people there had only one thing to do during the two hour wait, so that by the time we could return to our seats, it was quite the scene. 🙈 Our sweet, sheltered homeschooled children were awakened to some of the ways of the world that night, for sure. 🤣🥴 Gracious!!!

But alas, Hank came out on stage and was GREAT, even still as an older man in his 70’s. He played alllll the instruments, and even still could throw his leg up on the piano! 🤣😳

The boys ended their first year of fishing for PAC last April in 10th place; which was amazing for them! They overcame many obstacles and learned to fish better as partners. This particular tournament happened to fall on Jason’s birthday (he’s their boat captain), so our friends camping close-by helped him celebrate. 🤣😁

(We enjoyed it to the fullest and it FLEW by; so, slowing down to make posts didn’t happen. I don’t even know how it’s almost September. 🥴)

In April, we ventured to Beaufort with my family to see the Blue Angels in action. 🤩 They were awesome to see in person!
